INTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S DAY MESSAGE
Dear Esteemed Colleagues, Partners, and Fellow Nigerians,
Today, as we commemorate International Women’s Day 2026, we stand united with women across Nigeria and around the world to celebrate courage, resilience, excellence, and the enduring contributions of women in every sphere of society. This day is not merely symbolic; it is a reminder of how far we have come, the battles we continue to fight, and the collective responsibility we share in shaping a more equitable future.
As medical women, we occupy a unique and powerful intersection of leadership, compassion, science, and service. Every day, across teaching hospitals, primary health centres, research institutes, communities, and policy tables, Nigerian women doctors are advancing healthcare delivery, strengthening systems, mentoring the next generation, and advocating for the vulnerable. We are not only caregivers, we are innovators, educators, researchers, administrators, and changemakers.
International Women’s Day 2026 calls us to reflect deeply on the state of women’s health and women’s leadership in our nation. While progress has been made, significant gaps remain. Maternal mortality, limited access to quality reproductive health services, gender-based violence, underrepresentation in decision-making spaces, and inequitable career advancement pathways continue to challenge us. These are not abstract statistics; they are lived realities affecting our patients, our colleagues, and our communities.
We must also recognize that empowering women is not solely a women’s agenda. It is a national development imperative. When women thrive, families thrive. When women lead, systems transform. When women are healthy, societies prosper.
As we celebrate today, let us move beyond rhetoric into action: measurable, visible, and sustained action. Let this International Women’s Day be a turning point where we recommit to building a healthcare system and a nation where no woman is left behind.
Together, we rise. Together, we heal. Together, we lead.
Happy International Women’s Day 2026.
