By Professor Rosemary Ogu, MWAN National President
World Hepatitis Day Webinar – July 28, 2025
Theme: “Hepatitis: Let’s Break It Down”

Good evening distinguished speakers, esteemed colleagues, invited guests, and all participants joining us from across Nigeria and beyond.
It is with great pleasure that I welcome you all to this special Public Enlightenment Webinar to commemorate World Hepatitis Day 2025, proudly hosted by the Medical Women’s Association of Nigeria (MWAN) Benue State Branch, in collaboration with the MWAN National Outreach Committee.

Today, we come together across distances—united by purpose—to break down the myths, misinformation, and silence around Hepatitis, a group of diseases that still impacts millions across Nigeria and globally. With this year’s theme, “Hepatitis: Let’s Break It Down,” we aim to simplify, demystify, and amplify the facts—so that individuals, families, and policymakers can make informed decisions. Viral hepatitis continues to pose a major public health threat, yet it remains underdiagnosed, undertreated, and misunderstood. Today’s event is not just about information—it is about transformation. We are here to simplify complex facts, spotlight the Nigerian experience, and strengthen community awareness towards prevention, early detection, and care. As MWAN, we remain committed to equitable health education, gender-responsive advocacy, and a future where hepatitis no longer claims lives in silence. We reaffirm our commitment to public health education, screening advocacy, and hepatitis elimination in line with national and global goals.

I commend Dr. Ifeyinwa Maureen Okeke, Chair of our National Outreach Committee, for her dynamic leadership; Dr. Patience Akpokwu Okpeh, MWAN Benue President, and the entire team for their coordination; and our esteemed speakers and moderator for lending their voices and expertise to this critical dialogue; Dr Solomon Obekpa, Obasi Emmanuel, and Doofan Ayatse-Agishi.
Let us engage actively and leave today better informed, more empowered, and resolutely committed to action.

You are all most welcome.
Thank you.
